ROUNDKICK RUMBLE X
Cornfield Collision
With cornstalks at the entrance, ring card girls dressed as farm girls and a tough group of Iowa fighters set to take on equally tough fighters from Nebraska, Missouri and Oklahoma, Pete and Pam Peterson presented the folks at the National Guard Armory in Carroll, Iowa with a night of Muay Thai and International Rules Kickboxing on Saturday, August 18, 2007 during RoundKick Rumble X, the Cornfield Collision. Results of the night…
BOUT 1 Men’s Super Middleweight International Rules
Jeremy Calhoun, Adams Muay Thai, Tulsa OK, vs Jerry Schroeder, Red Dragon
Fight Team, Des Moines, IA
Round 1
Schroeder, the older of the two fighters by 13 years, courageously took
the fight on one day’s notice. The last time he was in the ring was 7 years
ago. Calhoun, the taller of the two had a reach advantage also. He kept
outside and threw kicks to the legs and body of Schroeder the whole round
preventing Schroeder to get close enough to be effective.
Round 2
The second round was much like the first. Calhoun kept Schroeder at a
safe distance with strong leg and body kicks while using his punches to the
head of Schroeder when he dropped his hands to cover his body.
Round 3
Schroeder’s experience kept him in the fight. Calhoun continued the
third round with the same game plan he used in rounds 1 and 2. Schroeder
became weary and after withstanding the barrage from the last rounds was
unable to hold up and was forced to take an 8 count from Referee Carlton
Duncan. The fight ended with all judges scoring the fight 30-26.
Winner by Unanimous Decision—Jeremy Calhoun
BOUT 2 Men’s Super
Middleweight Muay Thai Rules
Able Mahaffey, Team RoundKick, Des Moines, IA, vs Bobby Herzberg, Team Brown,
Hopkins, MO
Round 1
The first round began slow as each fighter cautiously waited for the
other to slip up and make a mistake. Eventually Mahaffey, the taller of the
two fighters, came with a series of leg kicks which allowed him to move
forward and follow up with a series of punches to begin the action. Herzberg,
not wanting to give up ground, would grab hold of Mahaffey allowing Mahaffey
to throw knees to Herzberg’s body in the clinch. Herzberg fought back with
punches and kicks of his own but appeared to have little effect on Mahaffey.
Round 2
Mahaffey appeared more confident at the opening of the second round.
He came across the ring and focused on putting Herzberg on the defensive from
the beginning. Attacking Herzberg with powerful punches set up by kicks to
the legs and body, Mahaffey had Herzberg backing up or holding on most of the
round. Herzberg attempted to turn the tide a couple of times with attacks to
Mahaffey’s body but Mahaffey appeared to be the stronger of the two fighters,
especially in the clinch. He responded in return with a series of vicious
blows to Herzberg’s body, putting Herzberg down and forcing an 8 count from
Referee Carl Duncan. The round ended with Mahaffey trying to finish the
fight.
Round 3
The last round began with Mahaffey appearing as if he wanted to be
careful and not make a fatal mistake. He came across the ring, still
respecting Herzberg, but cautiously trying to set up the body attack that hurt
Herzberg in the last round. Herzberg backed away, apparently not yet
recovered from the last round which embolden Mahaffey and had him come forward
with another attack to Herzbergs body vicious enough to force Referee Carl
Duncan to step between the two fighters and stop the match at 1:47 of the
round.
Winner by TKO—Able Mahaffey
BOUT 3 Men’s Super Middleweight Muay Thai Rules
Ryan Clark, Team RoundKick, Des Moines, IA, vs Michael Jackson, Adams Muay
Thai, Tulsa OK
Round 1
The round started slow with the fighters testing the others defense.
Clark threw leg kicks at Jackson who responded with kicks of his own. They
got close and clinched, each throwing knees to the body but both ineffective
enough causing the referee to break them. Clark, with his hands up and elbows
down, appeared to wade inside through a series of kicks and punches from
Jackson, landed a series of punches to Jackson’s body that backed Jackson up
and forced him against the ropes. Clark proceeded to punish Jackson’s body
with kicks and punches, putting Jackson down and earning him an 8 count from
Referee Carl Duncan.
Round 2
Clark came out trying to finish the fight. He would attack, Jackson
would clinch, the referee would break the fighters and Clark would come
again. Clark waded through Jackson’s punches and kicks and landed a
devastating left hook to Jackson’s body. Jackson went to the canvass and spit
his mouthpiece out which indicated he was done with the fight. Referee Carl
Duncan waved his arms stopping the fight at 1:10 of the round
Winner by TKO—Ryan Clark
BOUT 4 Women’s International Rules Exhibition
Missy Biggerstaff, Team RoundKick, Des Moines, IA, vs Heather Holstein-Smith,
Team RoundKick, Carroll, IA
Both of these women from Team RoundKick came together in an International Rules scored exhibition match that excited the crowd. The fight was an excellent display of punches and kicks for three rounds. Each fighter stood in the middle of the ring and did their best to make the other retreat. They appeared to be equal in strength but throughout the match Biggerstaff had an edge with a more effective jab into the face of Holstein-Smith which kept Holstein-Smith at a safe distance and didn’t allow her to gain an advantage over Biggerstaff. The judges scored the fight 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27 in this scored exhibition.
Winner by Unanimous Decision—Missy Biggerstaff
BOUT 5 Men’s Welterweight Muay Thai Rules
Rocky Gabriel, Red Dragon Fight Team, Des Moines, IA, vs Joel Mickells, Mid
America Mama’s Boys, Omaha, NE
Round 1
Two fighters in the ring for their fighting debut. They were evenly
matched with punching and kicking skills but this was a muay thai matchup.
Gabriel would throw leg kicks and punches and Mickells would respond with leg
kicks and punches. Neither fighter was able to establish the dominant
position until…the clinch. It was then that the long arms of Mickells would
wrap around the head and shoulders of Gabriel and then the longer legged
Mickells would throw a left knee to the body followed by a right knee to the
body. Mickells would finish the round alternating knees to Gabriel’s body.
Round 2
Gabriel attempted to keep Mickells off with leg and body kicks but
Mickells discovered in the first round that he had superior skills in the
clinch. He worked his way inside Gabriel’s guard and proceeded to work the
knees to the body for most of the round.
Round 3
The last round was much like the second. Mickells with the superior
knees, was unable to finish Gabriel but he was the aggressor and the stronger
fighter at the final bell with the muay thai knees to Gabriel’s body. All
judges scored the fight 30-27.
Winner by Unanimous Decision—Joel Mickells
BOUT 6 Men’s Light Middleweight International Rules
Brian Schulz, Team RoundKick, Des Moines, IA, vs Shawn Ellis, Red Dragon Fight
Team, Des Moines, IA
Round 1
The bout opened with excitement as both fighters had the conditioning
and desire to battle for dominance. Throughout the round, the fighters were
able to connect kicks and punches, but also accidental low blows and
unintentional clinches. With constant exchanges and the upper hand going back
and forth between the fighters, it was difficult to determine which way the
fight was going, to Schulz or Ellis.
Round 2
From the beginning of this round, it was evident the corners provided a
lot of coaching. The fighters settled down and worked more strategically to
take control. Schulz kept marching forward with strong attacks which Ellis
handled and countered with kick and punch combinations. Ellis seemed to
develop strength in the counter rather than in initiating attacks.
Round 3
Schultz began the final round knowing the fight was in the hands of the
judges. He continued his second round plan of advancing with power. Ellis
again countered, but Schulz was ready for it. Halfway through the round,
Schultz appeared to be losing power, but soon picked it up again forcing Ellis
to remain in defensive mode. The final 10 seconds found both fighters in
close and striking with any weapon they could. The judges scored the bout
28-29, 27-30, 28-29.
Winner by Unanimous Decision—Shawn Ellis
BOUT 7 Men’s Super Welterweight Muay Thai Rules
Mike Weese, Team RoundKick, Des Moines, IA, vs Charles Johnson, Team Brown,
Hopkins, MO
Round 1
Both fighters exchanged blows early in the round. Weese appeared to be
a little faster in the ring. He moved in and out testing Johnson’s strength.
Midway through the round, Weese got inside and clinched with Johnson up
against the ropes. Weese threw a well placed knee to Johnson’s body that
doubled Johnson over and sent him to the canvass on his hands and knees. He
was unable to get up forcing Referee Terri Storm to stop the fight at 1:18 of
the round.
Winner by TKO---Mike Weese
BOUT 8 Men’s Light Welterweight International Rules
David Haith, Mid America Mama’s Boys, Omaha, NE, vs Mark Mickells, Mid America
Mama’s Boys, Omaha, NE
A scored exhibition between to fighters from the same gym didn’t appear to be an exhibition. Both guys came to fight and they excited the crowd in what may have been the closest fight of the night. They banged at each other for three rounds non-stop. Referee Mike Storm had to warn Haith during the fight for possible a near low blow but other than that he was hardly a factor in the fight. In a very close decision the judges scored the fight 29-28, 28-29 and 29-28.
Winner by Split Decision—David Haith
BOUT 9 Men’s Super Middleweight Muay Thai Rules
Clayton Skidmore, Team RoundKick, Des Moines, IA, vs Cedric Medagan Fagla, Mid
America Mama’s Boys, Omaha, NE
Round 1
A very close fight from the opening bell, each fighter took the best
the other could give from the outside and grabbed each other on the inside.
While in the clinch, neither was effective enough to be in charge. After
rolling on the ropes for several seconds, Referee Mike Storm broke the apart
and started them in the middle of the ring again. The round ended with
neither fighter having a clear advantage.
Round 2
Much like the first round. Rapid exchanges back and forth up to the
clinch. After rolling on the ropes, the referee would break them and start
the fighters in the middle of the ring. Again neither fighter having a clear
advantage
Round 3
Both fighters came into the middle of the ring understanding it could
be anybody’s fight. Fagla tried to take early control with punches to
Skidmore’s head and kicks to the body. Skidmore refused to let him gain an
edge and retaliated with the same ferocity he was receiving to steal the
moment back. The crowd was on its feet applauding at the final bell in a very
close fight that could have gone to either fighter. The judges scored the
fight 29-28, 27-30 and 29-28.
Winner by Split Decision—Clayton Skidmore
BOUT 10 Men’s Light Middleweight Muay Thai Rules
Adam Brown, Team RoundKick, Des Moines, IA, vs Drew Dober, Mid America Mama’s
Boys, Omaha, NE
Round 1
Both fighters entered the ring confident. At the opening bell each
came forward to establish dominance over the other. It didn’t take long for
Dober to show everyone he was the stronger of the two. He threw a series of
left and rights to Brown’s head that backed Brown up to the ropes and trapped
him there. Dober then proceeded to throw a brutal left round kick to the
right side of Brown’s body that buckled Brown. The ropes were the only thing
holding Brown up forcing Referee Mike Storm to step in and give Brown an 8
count. When the fight continued, Dober was all over Brown. Throwing
unanswered punches and kicks at Brown backing him into a corner. Brown was
warned by the referee to fight back rather than simply cover up and then he
would throw a short flurry of punches to save himself. Dober was unfazed. He
continued pummeling Brown in the corner causing the referee to step in for a
second 8 count in the round. The bell to end the round rang as the count
ended.
Round 2
Between rounds, Brown was warned that he would have to start fighting
back or the fight would be stopped. At the bell to start the round, Dober
came across the ring and started the onslaught. Brown tried to fight back but
was not doing anything to deter Dober. Dober was hitting Brown with too many
unanswered blows. At :30 of the round Referee Mike Storm stepped in and
stopped the fight.
Winner by TKO—Drew Dober
